OTHER PASSAGES CONCERNING THE DEITY OF CHRIST:
Here’s some bonus material for everyone. Since I couldn’t fit all of the Scripture passages about the deity of Christ into two blog posts, here are some additional references on the subject. It isn’t a complete list, of course, but it’s a good start.
Hebrews 1:3 not only teaches us that Jesus is maintaining all of creation, but it also says that Jesus is the exact representation of God’s nature —
He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high… (Hebrews 1:3)
Hebrews 1:8, in quoting Psalm 45:6, addresses Jesus as “God.” In fact, the author of Hebrews sets out to show us that Jesus is greater than the angels, greater than Moses, and greater than the high priests because he isn’t an angel and he isn’t a human, he’s God.
Philippians 2:5-11 is a key passage, as it mentions Jesus existing “in the form” of God and having “equality” with God. The whole passage teaches us that Jesus, being God, “emptied himself” and became a man, then was “exalted” by God. Before Jesus “emptied himself” at his first coming, he was God from all eternity.
In the Gospels we find clear teaching that Jesus is God:
In Matthew 5:21-22; 27-28, when Jesus says, “You have heard that it was said…But I say to you,” he’s placing his word on an equal standing with the Old Testament.
Jesus regularly called himself the Son or the Son of God. You can see this in Matthew 11:25-30, and in Matthew 17:5, God calls Jesus his Son; in Matthew 25:31-46, Jesus not only calls himself the Son, but he also claims to be the ultimate Judge, a role reserved only for God (see Genesis 18:25 and Joel 3:12).
In John 3:13, Jesus claims existence prior to being born in Bethlehem; in both John 5:21 and John 11:25 Jesus claims to have power over life and death; in John 8:19, Jesus claims an unusual relationship with the Father, different from our relationship with the Father; in John 10:30, Jesus claims to be One with the Father; in John 14:7-9, to see Jesus is to see the Father; in John 14:23, Jesus works closely with the Father; and in John 20:28, Jesus accepted being called God by his disciples.
Finally, the rest of the New Testament is filled with passages that teach us that Jesus is God: Romans 9:5; 1 Corinthians 8:6; 2 Corinthians 5:10 Colossians 1:15-20; Colossians 2:9; 2 Timothy 4:1 (where Paul refers to Jesus as the Judge of all the earth); Titus 2:13; and 2 Peter 1:1.
